- There will be a Funeral Mass held on Saturday November 25, 2017 at 12:00 pm at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard, with Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw officiating for the repose of the soul of Norma Popio, 94, of Poland, formerly of Girard, who peacefully passed away Sunday afternoon, November 19, 2017 with her loving family by her side.

Norma will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends for her sense of humor and amazing quick wit, her sweet personality and unconditional love for all.

She was born August 16, 1923 in Youngstown, the daughter of Giangregorio and Maria (DiTanna) Mendozzi. She moved to Ely, Nevada at age 17 to be with her sister Carmella and young family where she graduated from White Pines High School in 1941. After high school Norma moved back to the Youngstown area and worked for the Tamarkin Company. She then met and married her husband Joe and they raised their family in Girard, Ohio.

Norma was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and spent many years volunteering at St. Rose School cafeteria and was one of the long time “cafeteria ladies” along with being a member of the St. Rose Ladies craft club. She was proud of her Italian heritage and of being a homemaker. She was a true matriarch for her family. Her family and friends will miss her amazing culinary skills including her homemade lasagna, pizza and brownies. Throughout the years Norma enjoyed spending time with the extended Mendozzi, Popio and Rondinelli families.

Her husband Joseph N. Popio whom she married August 2, 1952 died July 17, 2013.  

She leaves behind to hold onto her precious memories two daughters, Madalyn (Mike) Petro of Girard and June Popio of Pittsburgh; her sister-in- law Jane Mendozzi of Struthers and sister-in-law Antoinette (Gene) Calcagni of Poland along with many wonderful nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, her wonderful caretakers and many friends.  

Besides her parents and husband, Norma was preceded in death by her son Thomas Popio, two sisters Carmella DiCianno and Frances Lariccia and two brothers Joseph and Mario Mendozzi.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 10:00 am until 11:50 am at St. Rose Church, Girard prior to the funeral mass.

On Behalf of Norma’s family, they would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the entire staff of the Woodlands Assisted Living, her caretakers, and Crossroads Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion shown to her over the years.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

In lieu of flowers material contributions may be made in Norma’s name to Rescue Mission of The Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Youngstown, Ohio 44510 and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O.Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
