Bettie DeFiore Obituary

Indiana – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Christine Church, 3165 S Schenley Ave., Youngstown, with Father Zachary Coulter officiating, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, Boardman, for Bettie Mae (Sciortino) DeFiore, 94, of Indiana, formerly of Youngstown, who peacefully passed away on Saturday afternoon, March 9, 2019.

Bettie will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends for her generosity, kind heartedness and sense of dry wit.

She was born May 8, 1924 in Youngstown, the daughter of Ned and Edith (Nuzzie) Sciortino. Bettie lived in the Youngstown area until 2008 when she decided she wanted to be closer to her daughters, so she would spend half the year with Gina in Indiana and half the year with Michelle in Hillard.

Bettie was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and aided in the war effort by being “Rosie the Riveter” working at General Fireproofing. Prior to her children being born, Bettie was employed at Livingston’s Department Store in the foundation department and then became a proud homemaker and the matriarch for her family. Bettie was an amazing cook, and everyone always asked for her recipes, especially for her famous “Bettie’s Chicken”.

Bettie was a charter member of St. Christine Church and was active in the Senior Citizens where she was an officer.

Bettie had many passions throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, watching the Cleveland Indians, playing cards with her family and friends and was an avid BINGO player multiple times a week. She also loved listening to Frank Sinatra music and attended two of his concerts.

Her husband Peter Michael DeFiore whom she married September 17, 1949 at St. Dominic Church passed away February 10, 1998.

She leaves behind to hold onto to her precious memories her daughters Michelle Kondas of Hillard, Gina (Tom) Muth of Indianapolis, Indiana and Lisa Mottice of Canton, six grandchildren Annmarie (Devon) Novotney, Kaitlyn (John) Kordalis, John (Emily) Muth, Mitchell (Natalie) Kondas, Megan Lyden and Bryan Mottice, six great grandchildren Gwen, Brad, John, Penny, Phillip and Peter, and a brother John (Eleanor) Sciortino of Youngstown along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides her parents and husband, Bettie was preceded in death two brothers Vincent and Ned Sciortino Jr. and three sisters Mary Habel, Phyllis Mantini and Geraldine Youngross.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Friday morning, March 15, 2019 from 8:45 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home 4221 Market St., Boardman.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
