Kathryn Sekula Obituary

Poland – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Church, Boardman with Father Zachary Coulter officiating, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman for Kathryn Ann Sekula, 91, of Poland, who peacefully passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2018 with her loving family by her side.

Kathryn will always be remembered and loved for her generosity, caring and loving personality and being strong willed. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

She was born September 21, 1926 in Youngstown the daughter of James and Angela (Moore) Bebackwa and was a lifelong area resident.

Besides being a proud homemaker and a true matriarch for her family, Kathryn was employed as a Registered Nurse for over 42 years and retired in 1985 from St. Elizabeth Medical Center.  

She graduated from East High School in December of 1944 and was a charter member of St. Luke Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.  Kathryn was also a member of the Catholic Nurses Association and volunteered at Sunrise Assisted Living Center.

Kathryn had many passions throughout her life. She enjoyed gardening, doing needle point, spending time at the ocean and boating. Her most valuable time that she enjoyed most was with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Kathryn was an excellent cook and baker and her family will miss all her delicious Italian food especially her pizzelles.

Her husband Edward J. Sekula whom she married October 18, 1946 died October 15, 2012. 

She leaves behind to hold on to her memories a son Andrew (Roslyn) Sekula, a daughter Karen (Ronald) Shaughnessy, four granddaughters Melissa (Dr. Alex) Cooker, Andrea (Daniel) DeVito both of South Carolina, Dr. Stephanie (Dr. Ronald) Dorbish and Natalie (Eric) Saheli both of Columbus, thirteen great grandchildren Noah, Elijah and Jonah Cooker, Savannah, Mia and Gabriel DeVito, Benjamin, Alexander, Andrew and Ronald Dorbish and Samuel, Rose and Sophia Saheli and three sisters Rita Kozak, Delores (Chris) Baharis and Gloria Mahoney along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. .

Besides her parents and husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by four sisters Mary Olguin, Phyllis Nigro, Josephine Grifith and Marie Bydo.   

Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

The family of Kathryn would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the entire staff of Sunrise Assisted Living Center for all the care and compassion that was shown to them and to Kathryn throughout this difficult time. 

            Burial will take place at Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown.
