Dear Connie: I was touched to see the picture of Tommy in the Vindy. That's how I remember him. I think the last time I was down at Cedars was when I saw you seating folks and I walked in. It was great to see you. I have fond memories of Cedars and the eclectic music down there. My brother Dan took a picture of Cedars that I know you would love to see. Send me an email and I can arrange for you to get a copy of it. Sorry that I could not make the calling hours and Friday services to see you and tell you this in person. Again all my sympathies and condolences to you and your family...Mike

Tommy you were unique in this town. You ran the Cedars like it was in Greenwich Village and we expats who returned were grateful for the solace of a dark bar filled with great music. The Poetry nights were a hoot. You were truly your own man. Your search for and promotion of unique music was superb. Your welcoming bellow from behind the bar was the best. Hope you find the choir of angels..

I remember meeting Tommy for the first time. It was around 1979. I had seen some calendar posters on the YSU campus announcing bands at a place called Cedars. Because the calendars were embellished with the sort of psychedelic art I had often seen in San Francisco (where I grew up), it piqued my curiosity.
So, one evening, I head downtown to find this place and, while still a block away, I begin to catch drifts of the music—original sounds. Not the typical cover band or DJ copy heard around town. I finally find the place on Hazel Street, go inside, and I am immediately drawn to the music, the decor, and that wallpaper. Tommy greeted me warmly, and I became a regular until the mid-1980s when work took me abroad.
I remember Tommy to be a great conversationalist who could discuss matters from the obvious to the sublime. Whether the subject was music, history, or matters of science, Tommy always had something interesting to say about it. I will always have fond memories of Tommy and the Cedars Lounge.

My condolences to the family and friends of Tom Simon. Through a mutual friend (Bob Rogers) I had the good fortune of meeting Tom and getting to know him during my last few years of college at YSU. Tom was a gentleman with an outstanding sense of humor and an abiding sense of curiosity. He had such an easy-going personality that it was always a pleasure to be around him. I have thought about Tom often over the years, and I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing.

Ahh Tommy was always a classy guy, who cared deeply about the people that came into the Cedars. It was Tommy who really kept the hope alive in our downtown and I loved going there to see him and catch a quick beer. He was an icon of downtown Youngstown. My deepest condolences to his family, who by the way always treated Michele and I with kindness every time we saw them. With love. Bob

My deepest sympathies of out to Tommy's family. He was an inspiration to so many of us. When I needed a job, he gave me one. When I needed a ride to the airport, he gave me one. He was supportive to all the crazy ideas we came up with at the bar and he was never judgmental. He provided us with a lifetime of memories, friends, and a place to be ourselves. May he rest-in-peace, however Tommy will live on forever in our hearts. Lisa Childers.
