Obituary

Youngstown — Anthony C. Julian, 93, of Youngstown, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2026, with his loving family by his side.

Anthony was born May 23, 1933, in Youngstown, the son of Rocco and Giovanina “Jenny” (Ciampo “Champ”) Giuliano “Julian.” A lifelong resident of Youngstown, Anthony was proud of his Brier Hill roots and carried with him throughout his life the strong sense of family, community, and tradition that shaped his childhood. He was a graduate of The Rayen School.

Anthony began his career as a jeweler after attending The Buckeye School of Watch Repair, a profession he proudly pursued for 12 years. His life of public service began when he was appointed through Civil Service as Youngstown City Weighmaster. He was later promoted within the Health Department to Sealer of Weights & Measures.

In 1971, Anthony established the Youngstown Office of Consumer Affairs, beginning a remarkable career as one of the earliest and most influential advocates for consumer rights in the Mahoning Valley. Charged with enforcing state and federal consumer laws and regulations, he was instrumental in writing legislation that established criminal penalties for violations. He believed deeply that consumers deserved to be informed, protected, and treated fairly.

His innovative programs brought consumer education directly to the people. Through a Consumer Advisory Council Speakers Bureau, a television program, and the Consumers Action Line—where he personally took complaints live—Anthony became a familiar and trusted voice for consumers throughout the community.

His dedication to public service extended well beyond the Office of Consumer Affairs. By Federal Court order, he was appointed Hearing Officer to resolve complaints involving the Youngstown Water Department. He served on consumer advisory boards for Ohio Edison, East Ohio Gas, and AT&T, and was appointed to the United States Draft Board, where he served for 25 years.

Widely recognized as a pioneer of consumerism in the Mahoning Valley, Anthony earned a well-deserved reputation as a determined advocate for consumer rights while also championing ethical and responsible business practices. His many accomplishments and honors were recognized in the Congressional Record.

In 1980, Anthony was elected to the Youngstown Board of Education, where he served for 16 years. During his tenure, he continued his commitment to education and consumer economic literacy while supporting numerous programs benefiting Youngstown students and families.

Anthony's love for his community was evident in countless other endeavors. He served on the committee that established the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest and served four terms as a Trustee. For 28 years, he chaired the Miss Italian Youngstown Beauty & Talent Pageant. He also devoted five years to the original Mill Creek Junior Baseball League.

Among his many honors, Anthony received the Ohio Consumer’s Council Public Official Consumer of the Year Award and an Ohio Senate Recognition for Outstanding Community Service.

Yet, for all of his professional accomplishments and public service, Tony considered his greatest achievement to be his family.

He was a true patriarch who made his family his first priority and took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments. He cherished traveling to Florida, but even more, he cherished being present for his family’s sporting events, activities, celebrations, and everyday moments. His presence, his stories, his determination, and his unmistakable personality will remain part of the family legacy he leaves behind.

Anthony is survived by the love of his life, his wife of more than 70 years, the former Joan Hill, whom he married on July 4, 1956; his children, Mark (Kaye) Julian, Andrew (Elaine) Julian, Suzanne Julian, and Lance (Nicole) Julian; son-in-law Terry Thomas; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; and many cousins and dear friends.

Besides his parents, Anthony was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Lisa Thomas; daughter-in-law Susan Julian; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard (Lilian) Julian, Chester (Ann) Julian, and John (Mary Ann) Julian; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Antonette (Emil) Petrillo, Carmel (Louis) Ponzi, and Gloria (Sal) Mancini.

Anthony's life was one of service, devotion, perseverance, and love. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary record of accomplishment, but generations of family who were blessed by his presence and a community made better by his determination to stand up for what he believed was right.

He will always be remembered as “The Man, The Myth and The Legend”—a pioneer of consumerism in the Mahoning Valley, a tireless fighter for consumer rights, a protector of ethical and responsible business people, and, above all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Friends and family may pay their respects to Anthony on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

A prayer service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 10:20 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, St. Charles Campus, 7345 Westview Dr., Boardman.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
