Liberty - There will be a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial held on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian, Rd., Youngstown, with Chorbishop Michael Kail officiating for Anthony T. "Tony" Tombo Sr., 94, of Liberty, who passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, April 7, 2011 with his loving family by his side. Tony will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his humbleness, being a peacemaker and role model. He was born May 30, 1916 in Struthers, Ohio and was a lifelong area resident, the son of Cesidio and Jesse (Tiani) Tamburro of Fresinone, Italy. Tony was employed as a steel worker with Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, J & L Steel and LTV Steel Company and retired in 1979. He was a graduate of Struthers High School and a member of St. Maron Church, the Sons of Italy, a Commander of the VFW Post 3538, and was a former trustee in the United Steel Workers Union. Tony was a United States Army Veteran of World War II where he earned the rank of Corporal and fought in the Battle of New Guinea and Battle Luzon. He was awarded the following decorations and citations for his duty to our country; the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a twice undefeated Golden Gloves Champion. He always put his family first and was a true hero in their eyes. Tony loved to sing especially at the family gatherings and to his grandchildren. He was a very talented singer and sang with the Barber Shop Quartet. He leaves behind to hold on to his memories his wife of over 70 years the former Helen "Skippy" Nakley whom he married July 6, 1940, three children, Joan (Ezio) Ferri and Kathleen (John) Garchar-Progar both of Canfield, and Anthony T. Tombo Jr. of Hubbard., ten grandchildren Frank Ferri, Michelle (Mike) Sotka, Richard (Bianca) Garchar, Carla (Gabriel) Saluan, Kate (David) Guelich, Mark (Carla) Ferri, Bradley Garchar, Joseph Ferri, Stephanie Tombo, and Anthony T . Tombo III and eleven great grandchildren Jordan, Michael, Andrew, Ethan, Joey, Allison, Alex, Madeline, Robert, Elena, Francesca. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lena Gentile and Lucy Tombo and three brothers Frank, Albert, and Alfonso Tombo. Friends may call on Sunday, April 10 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where the Prayers of Incense Prayer Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, and again on Monday April 11, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. until 12:50 p.m. at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Rd., Youngstown. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the great men of the Trumbull County American Legion. Material contributions may be made in Tony's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
