Daniel E. Owens, 90 Decorated World War II Veteran, Retired Ohio Bell Manager. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Youngstown, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, for Daniel E. Owens, 90 , who passed away Friday afternoon at Hospice House with his family by his side. Daniel was born March 22, 1923 in Vermillion, Kansas the oldest of eight children to James Edward and Ruth Mallory Owens. He attended primary and secondary schools in Concordia and Clyde, Kansas. He was a World War II Veteran of General Patton's legendary Third Army. He led a platoon of combat infantry through three major campaigns in France, Germany and Belgium and was part of the force that drove back the German troops that broke through the allied lines in the vicinity of Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. He served almost six years in the infantry and was discharged as a Technical Sergeant in 1945. After World War II he served three years in the Military Police and was discharged in 1948 as Sergeant First Class. He was employed by Passarelli Brothers Automotive Service for twenty three years as a truck and wrecker mechanic and operator. He was known area wide for his expertise in towing and recovery operations and for his skills and abilities in fabricating and modifying towing equipment. In 1973 he joined Ohio Bell Telephone as a Motor Vehicle Inspector. In 1975 he was promoted to management and became area foreman in the Fuel Management System. In 1977 he was promoted to Foreman of Fleet Management and Vehicle Maintenance and he was eventually responsible for over 500 vehicles in a four county area. In 1982 he consolidated his Youngstown city forces and equipment and established a central repair facility in a near downtown facility. He retired in 1988 and most recently has been employed as a driver for Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler, Dodge & Jeep. He was a member of the church, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Buckeye State Sherriff's Association and an Associate Member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a licensed Amateur Radio Technician and a past member of several regional fleet management associations. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty seven years the former Marie Tauro. Also passing before him were his brothers Roger and David; his infant sister Edna; his two other sisters Marjorie and Neva. He leaves a son Daniel E Owens Jr. (fiancAC. Fran Chopp) of Boardman; a daughter Jacquelyn (John) Johnston of Austintown; a brother John Owens of Ripon, Wisconsin; a sister Kathleen Parish of Blue Springs, Missouri; a brother-in-law, James (Eleanor) Tauro of Poland; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnston of Waterford, MI, Jason (Kelly) Johnston of Columbus, Kelly (Steven) Lubert of Columbus, Matthew Owens of Boardman; two great grandsons, Sebastian and Benjamin Lubert ; two step-great granddaughters Cameron and Chloe Dewey; and a very special friend Arlene Larson of Youngstown; along with several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home in Boardman.
