Obituary

Poland - There will be a funeral service held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at The Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Rd., Poland, for Donald Pipino, 83, of Poland, who passed away with his loving family by his side Friday afternoon, August 26, 2011. Don will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends. His family was his greatest joy and they cannot express the void he leaves in their lives. He was a keen intellect, civil libertarian and consummate gentleman. Don was born in Niles, Ohio on March 16, 1928, the first son of Salvatore and Mary Pipino. He attended Niles public schools and graduated from Oberlin College in 1949. After serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Augusta, Georgia he moved to Youngstown, Ohio. In 1952 he purchased the Vagnozzi Insurance Agency and was one of the founders and charter president of the Mahoning Valley Chapter of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU). He was the winner of the prestigious Edwin R. Hardy Award in 1955 as the "Outstanding Graduate of the Insurance Institute of America." The company began specializing in providing insurance and risk management services to two of the emerging leaders in the shopping center industry, The Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation and The Cafaro Company. His brother and best friend James "Doc" Pipino joined him and became his life-long business partner. All of his beloved children, including his son in law Ed Muransky had the privilege of working with and learning at their father's side. The Donald P. Pipino Company continues to be a nationally recognized specialist in this field. Don was a former owner of Fonderlac Country Club as well as club champion there. He won many tournaments at local clubs and loved his time on the golf course and driving range. He also was an avid card player and valued the special friendships he forged through these activities. An accomplished musician, Don was an ardent patron of the arts and generous supporter of many local charities. He served as chairman for several fundraising drives and was a member of many boards. He was especially interested in advancing the educations of financially challenged but eager students and co-founded the Italian Scholarship League which is now the Edward J. DeBartolo Scholarship Fund. He is survived by his wife Delores; children Mary (Steven) DeMaiolo, Christine(Ed) Muransky, Sam(Lorraine) Pipino and Joe (Beth) Pipino; grandchildren Eddie, Deloran and Donielle Muransky; Sammy and Grayson Pipino; Candace (Corey) Shaner and Donny Pipino; and great grandson Luca Shaner; brother James "Doc" (Patty) Pipino, aunts Angie Martin and Carrie Reigle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was cared for with love and dignity by his son in law, Dr. Steve DeMaiolo and Chris Haus-Riehl and her staff as his health declined. He was preceded in death by his parents, whom he deeply loved and honored throughout their lives. From them he acquired fluency in the Italian language and an abiding love for the Italian culture. Friends may call on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:50 p.m. at The Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Dr., Poland. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman.
