Poland – Elizabeth A. Sweed, 78, of Poland, passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday morning, October 31, 2026.
Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered for her generous heart, kindness, and straightforward nature. She was a woman who loved deeply, gave freely, and was never one to shy away from speaking her mind. Her family was the center of her world, and the love she shared with those closest to her will live on in the countless memories she leaves behind.
Born December 27, 1947, in Youngstown, Elizabeth was the daughter of George and Anna M. (Luchansky) Kaschak and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a 1965 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and went on to graduate from Choffin Career Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse. In addition to being a devoted homemaker, Elizabeth spent many years caring for others as an LPN at St. Elizabeth Hospital on Belmont Avenue, followed by positions with home health agencies and doctors' offices. Most recently, she enjoyed keeping busy working at S&T Engraving in Poland.
Elizabeth had a strong Catholic faith that was an important part of her life. She was especially devoted to praying the rosary, a tradition she cherished sharing with her granddaughter, Sydney, during the month of May. These special moments together were among the many treasured memories they created.
She had a gift for making a house feel like home. An excellent baker, Elizabeth filled the lives of those she loved with homemade treats, and her cookies will be dearly missed, especially her famous sugar cookies and pretzel rods. She was also very proud of her Slovak heritage and lovingly carried on family traditions by making homemade pierogies.
Elizabeth found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether tending to her garden, working on crafts, or decorating for every holiday. She loved making each season special and bringing warmth and happiness to those around her. She was also an enthusiastic sports fan, faithfully cheering on West Virginia during football season and Duke during basketball season, and she especially loved the excitement of March Madness.
Above all else, Elizabeth treasured her family. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time with her children and granddaughter, Sydney, who held an especially precious place in her heart. The two shared a very special bond, and Elizabeth was not only her grandmother but also her best friend. She proudly attended Sydney's activities and was always there to cheer her on, never wanting to miss a moment. Their love and the memories they shared will forever remain in Sydney's heart.
Elizabeth leaves behind to cherish her memory her three children, Kimberly (Jason) MacDonald, Kerrie (William) McGowan, and Kristopher Sweed; her beloved granddaughter, Sydney, whom she adored; her faithful companion, Max; along with many cousins and dear friends who were blessed to know and love her.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Though Elizabeth's presence will be deeply missed, the love she gave, the traditions she passed down, the laughter she shared, and the memories made around her table will remain with her family forever. Her sugar cookies may eventually be gone, but the sweetness she brought to the lives of those she loved will never fade.
Family and friends may pay their respects to Elizabeth on Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 5:50 p.m. at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman, where a funeral service will take place at 6:00 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Charles Rooney, O.P.
