Obituary

Youngstown- Elvira H. "Bena" Hernandez, 85, entered into eternal rest on Thursday morning with her family and devoted friends by her side at her residence after a long illness. She was born January 6, 1926 in Coeneo Michoacan, Mexico, a daughter of Rafael and Nicandra (Rodriguez) Herrera and she came to the U.S. as a child. Later in her life she proudly became a naturalized citizen. She was raised in the Monkey's Nest neighborhood and had lived on Youngstown's west side for many years. She was a 1944 graduate of The Rayen School. She had worked at McCrory's and Working Men's Overhall before working as a press operator at Packard Electric in Warren from which she retired after 27 years in 1983. Bena was a member of St. Brendan's Roman Catholic Church in Youngstown, the Ladies Society of the Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana, and a childhood girlfriends group which met monthly for many years. Family was most important to Bena and she was a very devoted wife and mother. She also enjoyed watching tv, baking and decorating wedding cakes, which made many a bride's day very special. She married Tony Hernandez, whom she lovingly referred to as "Doll" on November 10, 1950 and he preceded her in death March 15, 2006. She is survived by two children, Joseph (Diane) Hernandez of Meadowlakes, TX; and Linda M. Roth of Youngstown. She also leaves behind a brother, Richard Herrera of Boardman; four grandchildren; Consuelo (Robert) Cutlip of Youngstown, Lisa (Raynoldo) Sierra of Fredricksburg, TX, Antonio (Jacqueline) Roth of Youngstown, and Stephanie (Francisco) Garcia of Oakley, CA; four great grandchildren, Bianca and Sebastian Garcia, Jared Sierra, and Isabella Cutlip; her brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, especially Tyller Ray Guzman; and her many friends, especially Josie Martinez, who affectionately called her "Beans". Bena was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Esperanza Guzman, and a sister-in-law, Jane Hernandez. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone at Hospice of The Valley, especially Cheryl Wellman, Barb Cross, Chris Chrestay, Rev. Gary Rozier, and Mary Lou Casey, for all the wonderful, compassionate care and strong support they gave to Bena and to those she left behind. Also, the family would like to thank her private caregivers, Nicole Sakara, Patsy Medicus, and Diane Lamberto for all of the love and kindness they gave to Bena. Memorial services will be held at 6 pm Monday evening at the Rossi Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman. Friends may call prior to services from 4-6pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of The Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH, 44512.
