Obituary

Youngstown – There were private funeral services held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio officiating, for James Andrew Acierno, 86, of Youngstown, who passed away on November 22, 2016 at his residence.

James will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his funny and sociable personality.

He was born July 28, 1930 in Grove City, Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew and Anna (Hardesty) Acierno and moved to the Youngstown area as a child.

James graduated from East High School where he played football, baseball and excelled in basketball making the all city team and was a letterman.

He was a proud United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War and earned the rank of Private Second Class. James served with the Battery B 450th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion and was awarded the following decorations for his service to our country: The Good Conduct Medal and The National Defense Service Medal.

James was employed at General Fireproofing and then retired as a police officer from Mahoning Bank.

James had many passions throughout his life, but the main two were golf and his grandson Andrew "Scrappy" Longo. He was also an accomplished athlete throughout this whole life and enjoyed exercising, playing handball and golf all over at many courses. He had the talent and privilege to make 3 Holes-in-one which he was extremely proud of. James also was a talented painter of portraits along with being a member of the ITAM Brier Hill.

He leaves behind to hold onto his precious memories his daughter Judy (Andy) Longo of Boardman, his best friend and grandson Andrew Longo, his former wife Virginia Chiarello with whom he made his home, a sister Rosemary Taylor of Mineral Ridge, a sister-in-law and favorite relative Rose "Tootsie" Modarelli along with many other in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents.

Per James request there were no calling hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman.

In lieu of flowers material contributions may be made in James name to Ronald McDonald House, 10415 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44106 or to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Rd., Canfield, Ohio 44406.
