Girard — John Joseph Orlando, 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2026.
John was born on November 2, 1928, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Luciano and Merceda (Vecchiarelli) Orlando. He was proud to have grown up in the Smokey Hollow neighborhood and remained a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley.
A graduate of The Rayen High School, John continued his education at Akron Barber College. He went on to own and operate his own barber shop for more than 30 years before retiring in 1994. John truly loved his profession, and what he cherished most was the opportunity to visit with his customers, many of whom became lifelong friends and felt like family.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army from January 22, 1951, until receiving an honorable discharge on January 6, 1953. He was also a devoted member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown.
John enjoyed traveling to casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Mountaineer Racetrack, where he especially loved betting on the horse races and trying his luck at the dice tables. An avid golfer, he also looked forward to his daily roundtable discussions with friends at McDonald's, where they could always be counted on to solve the world's problems over a cup of coffee.
Above all, John was devoted to his family. He leaves behind the love of his life, his beloved wife of more than 61 years, the former Edith McGee, whom he married on September 8, 1964. He is also survived by his brother, Charles (Ruth) Orlando of Campbell; his sister-in-law, Lisa Orlando of Youngstown; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Samuel (Beverly) Orlando, Felix (Dolores) Orlando, and Anthony Orlando; and his sister, Carmela (Jerry) DelliQuardi.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 11:55 a.m. at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m., with the Very Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw, J.C.L., V.G., officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown, Ohio 44505.
John will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his faithful service to his country, his love of golf and sports, his warm sense of humor, and the genuine kindness and friendship he extended to everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
