Larry J. O'Brien

Jan 2, 1945 — Aug 30, 2026

YOUNGSTOWN - Larry J. O'Brien, 81, passed away on August 30, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman.

He was born on January 2, 1945, in Canton, the son of Holland and Ruth Brennaman O'Brien.

Larry was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and he went on to serve his community with distinction as an Ohio State Trooper at the Canfield Post for 28 years before retiring. During his time there, he was honored with the acknowledgment of Trooper of the Year, an award he took great pride in. His years of service reflected a life marked by commitment, discipline, and dedication to others.

Outside of his work, Larry loved hunting and, in his younger years, enjoyed collecting vintage knives and guns. These interests were part of the life he built and the memories he shared with those who knew him.

He is survived by his nieces, Paula Little, whom he was very close with and Kathy O'Brien-Keith. He is also survived by his nephews Tim (Jan) O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, and Dennis (Julie) O'Brien all of Canton, several cousins; and good friends, Lucy Flask of Canfield, whom was a lifelong friend, Mickey (JoAnn) Yurko of Canfield, and Tom Lepley and his sister Chris of Austintown.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene O'Brien and an infant brother; his sisters, Eileen (Paul) Little and Nona O'Brien; and his nephew, David O'Brien.

There will be a memorial service held at a later date.

"Larry was my dear loyal friend of 50 years. Through good and bad in times of sorrow and happiness, weakness and strength, he was always there. Goodbye to an amazing friend. His memory will forever be cherished by me. Now, in the presence of our Lord, he will know only joy, peace and perpetual happiness. You will be loved and missed." - Lucy
