Obituary

Boardman - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown, with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Jr. as celebrant, for Dr. Mario Santangelo, 83, of Boardman, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, who peacefully passed away early Saturday morning, September 26, 2015. Dr. Mario Santangelo was born October 5, 1931, in Youngstown and he was one of three children born to Anthony and Maria (Zarlenga) Santangelo. After graduating from The Rayen High School in Youngstown, he then attended the University of Pittsburgh where he obtained his undergraduate degree. Mario who had always had an interest in medicine as a young man then decided to pursue a career in dentistry. He attended the School of Dentistry at Loyola University in Chicago. Following the completion of his degree he spent many years in the private practice of medicine in Chicago. Dr. Santangelo was a professor of Dentistry at Loyola University, was Chairman of the Department of Radiology, and Associate Dean at Loyola University Dental School. He authored numerous articles for various dental journals and was a speaker for dental symposiums across the country. He was the Secretary and then Director of the American Dental Association. He was on the Assembly for the accreditation of dental schools. He received many awards including the prestigious Dr. Harry Strusser Memorial Award at NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Santangelo proudly served his country in the United States Air Force where he earned the rank of Captain after completing dental school. Although he was a long time resident of Chicago, Dr. Santangelo maintained his connections and love of the Mahoning Valley. In later years Mario came back to the area to take care of his brother, Vincent Santangelo and his sister, Antonette Santangelo and he decided to reside in Boardman. Of all his life's passions Mario was most devoted to the Catholic Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in particular. In 2014 Dr. Santangelo was named the "Man of the Year" from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica. Mario has devoted his energy and resources to many of the church's projects and causes. In particular, he has enjoyed helping support the students at St. Joseph the Provider School in Youngstown. It brings him great joy to see the development of the young people as they are nourished in both their catholic education and faith. Mario lived a full life and enjoyed walking and traveling. Dr. Santangelo was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Antonette Santangelo and his brother Vincent Santangelo which he is now reunited with in heaven. Friends may call on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 9:00 am until 9:55 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman. Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
