Mary
Chianese
May 3, 1918 – December 16, 2012
Mary C. Chianese, 94 BOARDMAN - There will be a prayers at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Michael Cariglio at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for Mary C. Chianese, 94, who died Sunday afternoon at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Youngstown on May 3, 1918, a daughter of Louis and Lucy Antonucci and had been a lifelong area resident. She went to Woodrow Wilson High School, where she played softball for various local teams and thus became the first ever woman to be inducted for softball into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame. While playing in the Youngstown Big "6" Loop in 1933, she earned "Most Valuable Player" laurels and while playing for the Moyer's team in the 1940 State Tournament, she again earned M.V.P. plaudits. Mary was a homemaker, who helped the schools as a food service aid when her boys were young. She also worked as a baby sitter for all those in need. Mary was a long time parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and enjoyed going to play bingo. Her husband, John "Yoxs" Chianese, whom she married in 1946, passed away in 1956. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Vince Chianese of Austintown and her grandchildren, Megan Chianese and E.J. Neff, both of Poland. The family wishes to thank the staff from Shepherd of the Valley for the love and compassion that they extended to Mary over the past few years. Besides her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death her son, John "Peepers" Chianese; and many brothers and sisters. Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi and Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.
