Obituary

Michael John Tsaknis, 91, died Sunday morning, June 14, 2015, in his home surrounded by his family. Michael was born November 28, 1924 in Kalimnos, Greece, the eldest child of John and Kalotina (Mougros) Tsaknis. As a young child he immigrated to the United States with his parents. He was a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area, first residing in Campbell and for the last 50 years in Boardman. He was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Michael was a World War II naval veteran serving in the Pacific theater from 1943 to 1945 aboard LCI-972 with landings at: Leyte, Ormoc Bay, Luzon Operation-Mindoro, Manila Bay-Bicol Operation Nasugbu, and Southern Phillipines- Palawan and Visayan Islands. He was honorably discharged and worked for 36 years for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. as a pantographoperator and then as an expediter/scheduler. Michael met the love of his life, Koula "Kay" Amorgeanos. They were married August 31, 1952 and was his beloved wife for 63 years. Michael was a member of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church and was a 20-year member of the church choir. He was an avid golfer, playing in several local leagues. He enjoyed reading, working on his classic Camaro, meeting for breakfast with his friends, all sports, and spending time with his family. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Nicholas Tsaknis who died in the Korean War (US Army), and Col. PeterTsaknis (US Army), a sister Silvia Salva and a grandson, Jerry Savakis. Besides his beloved wife, Michael leaves his children, Cynthia (Alexander) Savakis, Nicholas Tsaknis, Kathleen (Bryan) Chaka, and five grandchildren, Katherine Savakis, Michael-Jerry Savakis, Dr. Michael Chaka, Katie Chaka, and Second Lt. Mark Chaka, and numerous nieces and nephews. Michael will be remembered as a true gentleman, kind and cheerful to everyone he knew. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 20t, 2015 at 10:30 am St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman with Father Thomas Constantine officiating. Friends and family will be received Friday, June 19t, 2015 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm, with a Trisagion service at 6 pm at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, and again on Saturday from 10:00 am until 10:25 am at St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio. The family requests that material contributions can be made in Michael's memory to St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
