Obituary

Boardman - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, Youngstown, preceded by a 12:15 p.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman, for Peter T. Pernotto, 90, of Boardman, who peacefully passed away Wednesday evening, October 24, 2012 with his loving family by his side. Peter will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his sense of humor, kindness and generosity. He was born March 20, 1922 in Youngstown, the son of Angelo and Marie Antoinette (Colucci) Pernotto and was a lifelong area resident. Peter was initially employed with Botch-Pernotto Studios as a part-time photographer and was a lifelong steelworker with Republic Steel, finally retiring from the Hynes Steel Company in 1986. He was a golf caddy in his youth at Mill Creek Park Golf Course, a 1941 graduate of Wilson High School, a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post #1222 and a member of St. Patrick and St. Dominic Church. Peter served in the United States Army during World War II where he earned the rank of Private First Class. His occupation specialty was Medic and he landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on D Day plus 1. His military decorations and citations for his brave service include the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European, African, Middle East Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and Arrowhead, and he was awarded the Combat Medic Badge. In 1994, Pete and wife RoseMarie attended the 50th Anniversary for D Day ceremonies in Normandy, France and visited his ancestral village of Baiano, near Naples, Italy. He enjoyed gardening, walking his dog in Mill Creek Park, and photographing nature along with being a voracious reader and lover of history. He also loved spending time at Fellows Riverside Gardens. He instilled an appreciation for nature's beauty in all of his children and grandchildren. His wife was the former RoseMarie Taormina whom he married October 3, 1964. She passed away on March 1, 1997. He leaves behind to cherish his memory three children: Bernadette Pernotto, with whom he made his home, Colonel Edward "Teddy" Pernotto, US Air Force Reserve of Arlington, Virginia, and Geniene Pernotto of Boardman, two granddaughters Tara (David) Moretti and RoseMarie Pernotto, a great grandson David Moretti, two brothers, identical twin Andrew (Evelyn) Pernotto of Canfield and Michael (Donna) Pernotto of Austintown and his beloved pet Shih Tzu dog LuLu. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sister, Angela Harris, and five brothers: Angelo, Stephen, Luke, Anthony, and Humbert Pernotto. Friends may call on Sunday, October 28, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio. Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, with full military honors provided by the great veterans of the Trumbull County American Legion.
