Obituary

Youngstown - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Youngstown, with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio officiating, preceded by a 9:00 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, for Ralph A. DeToro Jr., 67, of Poland, who passed away Tuesday afternoon August 2, 2011. Ralph will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his big smile, cheerful personality and the love he showed to his family. He was extremely proud of his roots from the East Side of Youngstown and his Italian background. Ralph was born June 9, 1944 in Youngstown, the son of Ralph Sr. and Winifred (Wetzel) DeToro and was a lifelong area resident. He was owner and operator of Shenango Orthopedics Center for many years until they merged with ABI Orthotic & Prosthetics where he worked for the last 20 years. Most recently Ralph worked as a starter for Knoll Run Golf Course. Ralph was a 1962 graduate of East High School where he lettered in football and was class president. He was very instrumental along with being the chairman of the class reunion committee. Ralph then attended The Ohio State University and Youngstown State University studying Engineering. Ralph was a very active and proud member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where he was an usher, a member of the Vestibule Club, Catholic Men Fellowship Group, on the Festival and Spaghetti Dinner Committee, a senior adult funeral server, and started along with chairing the Our Lady of Mount Cameral Golf League. He also very instrumental in getting started the Knights of Columbus Immacolata Council 15086 where he was Grand Knight and was also a member of the 4th. Degree Knights of Columbus Poland Assembly 2596. He was a faithful volunteer on Monday's at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. Ralph was a United States Army Veteran during the Vietnam War and was awarded the following decorations; the Good Conduct Medal, the Sharpshooter Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Ralph enjoyed golfing, photography, Italian cooking, wine making, and gardening. He was active in Poland Baseball for many years and was a Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. He leaves behind his beloved wife of over 46 years the former Theresa A. LaPresta whom he married on July 17, 1965, five children Ralph (Amy) DeToro of Poland, Christopher (Lori) DeToro of Poland, Jonathan DeToro of Youngstown, Joseph (Christie) DeToro of Streetsboro, and Nicole DeToro of Poland, eleven grandchildren Kara, Gianna, Sam, Stephanie, Alex, Anna, Krista, Theresa, Alexis, Olivia, and Joseph Jr., two brothers Nick DiToro of Minnesota, and Bill (Emily) DeToro of Poland, and a sister Marian (Dan) Shelton of Houston, Texas. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call on Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, where the Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service at 2:45 p.m. Burial will take place at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
