Obituary

Struthers - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish, St. Nicholas Church, Struthers, preceded by a 9:45 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, for Robert H. "Bob" Filips, 87, of Struthers, who passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, July 15, 2016 with his loving family by his side. Bob will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his friendship to others, generous personality and being a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was born October 10, 1928 in Youngstown the son of Joseph and Margaret (Rhinehart) Phillips and was a lifelong area resident. Bob was a 1946 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where he excelled in football and was a four-year letterman along with being on the all city team. He then continued his education at Youngstown State University where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Accounting. Bob was employed for over 37 years with Republic Steel in the Truscon Division as the Credit Manager and Treasurer and retired in 1990. He was a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Golf League and St. Nicholas Church where he participated in the renewals. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. during World War II and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Bob received an honorable discharge and then returned to service in 1952 due to the Korean War. Bob had a true passion for magic since he was 9 years old. He was a member of the Youngstown Magic Club for over 73 years and was considered to be a leader and backbone for them. Bob performed his first magic show in the early 1940's at Taft School in Youngstown for the first draftees to the military from the Mahoning Valley. In 2006 he received the Spirit of Magic Award at the Columbus Magic Festival. The International Brotherhood of Magicians also known as I.B.M. and the Youngstown Club is an affiliate. The club is known as I.B.M. Ring Two and is now known as the Filips-Tutter-Doeright Ring in honor of Bob. Bob enjoyed vacationing to Florida, golfing, and playing games of chance at the Casinos, but his greatest moments were when he was spending time with his family. Bob leaves behind his wife of over 62 years the former Rosemarie Ianazone whom he married on October 10, 1953. They met while they were attending Youngstown State University together and she was the first woman that he dated. He also leaves a sister Erma Baumstark of Austintown, along with several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, a host of friends and his beloved grand cats Fletcher, Jake and Niles. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a daughter whom he missed dearly Lora Ann "Lori" Filips who passed away February 15, 2014 and a brother Joseph Filip. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home 4700 Market St., Boardman. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown. In lieu of flowers material contributions may be made in Robert's name to Westside Cats, 2217 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44509.
