Liberty - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown with the Very Rev. Msgr. Robert Siffrin officiating for Samuel Joseph, 91, who passed away on June 2, 2014. He was born March 18, 1923 in Youngstown the son of James and Josephine Joseph. Sam was a 1941 graduate of East High School, where he met his sweetheart and future wife Helen Lubonovic. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Ohio State University in Columbus, before enlisting to join the United States Marine Corp. He was sent to boot camp at Paris Island and became an Expert Rifleman, Drill Instructor and Platoon Sergeant. Helen came down at his request and they were married on July 5, 1943. He asked to be shipped overseas and was sent to California to become part of the Pacific War at the landing on Easter Sunday and the subsequent battles of Okinawa. He also participated in the Surrender of Japanese Military Forces at Tsingtao, China on the 25th October 1945. After the war, he returned to Youngstown to work for Star Bottling Corporation, bottlers of Squirt and Dad's Root Beer, a firm set up by his father. He and Helen raised a family of 5 children, Karen Segel, Esq. of Beverly Hills, California, Sharon Parillo of Los Vegas, Monica (Martin Stansfeld) of Scotland and France, Duane Joseph of Youngstown, and Darrel Joseph of Vienna, Austria, two grandchildren, Samya Yiannaki Papes and Adam Segel, two great granddaughters Amanda Rigby and Sophia Ghaffari of Mentor and two sisters Ruth Poe of Florida and Helen Mazloom of Florida. Sam loved gardening and going on fishing trips up to Quebec with his buddies. He enjoyed wildlife, especially feeding and watching the birds. He was an usher at St Edward Church for a number of years and did volunteer work for Goodwill Industries. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, his parents, and several brothers and sisters, and a grandson Paul Yiannaki. Friends may call on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at St. Edward Church Youngstown from 10:00 a.m. until 10:55 a.m. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery with military honors provided by the great men of the United States Marine Corps.
