Long Beach, California - Private services were held at Belmont Park Cemetery, with Father Thomas Constantine officiating, for Theodore P. "Ted" Kalivas, 88, of Long Beach, California, formerly of Youngstown, who peacefully passed away on Friday afternoon, April 27, 2012. Theodore will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends. He was born on June 25, 1923 in Kent and was raised in Youngstown the son of Peter and Sophia (Stanos) Kalivas. Theodore was a graduate of Scienceville High School and then attended The Ohio State University. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a Merchant Mariner and as an Engineer. Theodore was licensed by the United States Coast Guard to serve as an Engineer on Steam Vessels of any horsepower. He was on numerous vessels from May 2, 1944 until July 21, 1982. Ted was instrumental in erecting the impressive bronze sculpture "Jacobs Ladder" done by a prominent sculptor Jasper D'Ambrosi. It's located in San Pedro, California and is the First National Memorial to merchant Seaman in the United States. He was a proud and longtime active member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans-China Coasters Chapter. He leaves behind to hold on to his precious memories a sister Effie (Patrick) Pascarella of Boardman, three brothers James P. (Dorothy) Kalivas of Northridge California, Dr. George (Martha) Kalivas of Escondido, California, and Dr. John (Shelia) Kalivas of Calabasas, California along with many loving nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Irene Perry, and two brothers William and Louis Kalivas. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman. Burial took place at Belmont Park Cemetery.
