Obituary

Austintown - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Youngstown, with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Jr. officiating, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, for William D. "Dibbie" DeAngelo, 94, who was carried off by angels to his Heavenly home Wednesday evening, January 9, 2013 with his loving family by his side. Dibbie will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for being a true family man and patriarch. He always put his family first especially his children and grandchildren and supported them in all their endeavors. He was born November 3, 1918 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Carl and Florence (Trotti) DeAngelo and was a lifelong area resident. Dibbie was extremely proud of his Italian heritage along with being raised in the Smokey Hollow part of Youngstown. Dibbie was employed with Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company for over 41 years as a machinist and retired in 1981. For over 30 years he served his fellow workers as the Chief Shop Steward. He was a 1937 graduate of The Rayen School and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Golden Eagles. Dibbie was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He served with the 9th Infantry Division and fought for his country in the Battle of the Bulge and many other battles. He was an exceptional softball player and had the honor of managing many great softball teams with several advancing to the Ohio State Championship,including the Harrison Post 610 and the Sons of Italy 1038. He was especially proud of being selected to manage the 9th Infantry Division Softball Team, a unit that consisted of over ten thousand men, which toured Germany after World War II. Dibbie was inducted in 1980 to the Ohio State Softball Hall of Fame, in 1984 to the National Softball Hall of Fame in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and in 2001 to the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame. Dibbie was an avid sports fan and especially loved baseball always rooting on his favorite team the Boston Red Sox. His wife the former Lucile Pallante whom he married August 13, 1940 died April 20, 2002. He leaves behind to hold on to his memories his four children William DeAngelo Jr. of Austintown, Thomas DeAngelo of St. Charles, Illinois, Joseph (Renee) DeAngelo of Canfield and Debbie (Randy) Lowe of Austintown, nine grandchildren David DeAngelo, Alyson (Rob Messinger) DeAngelo, Thomas, Kristin, Katherine, Brian, Michael, Anthony DeAngelo and Brittany Lowe and three great grandchildren Ryan, Emily and Leo. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two daughter-in-laws Karen DeAngelo and Joy DeAngelo, two brothers Albert and Fred DeAngelo and two sisters Josephine Manes and Sylvia Pannunzio. Friends may call on Sunday, January 13, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
