Albert G. Dohar

Boardman - Albert G. Dohar, 71, of Boardman, entered into eternal rest Saturday evening, April 6, 2024.

He was born on “Christmas Day 1952,” the son of John M. and Paula (Yapur) Dohar, and married his loving wife, Barbara (Ellis), on May 24, 1981.

He was a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and Youngstown State. While earning his degree, he worked at Sparkle Market, and continued a career there for a significant number of years. Upon marrying Barbara, a teacher, he became “jealous” of her summers off, and this inspired a career change. Albert decided to go back to Youngstown State to obtain a teaching certificate and join his beloved wife in the field of education. He then went on to teach math in Youngstown City, Springfield Local, and Boardman school districts in a career that spanned more than two decades.

 In addition to being a devoted educator, Albert, an avid bowler, and golfer, also chose to mentor young people through athletics. He coached various sports during his teaching tenure, including football and softball. But no coaching endeavor was as near and dear to his heart as the bowling program, which he established at Boardman High School in 2000 and grew from a club into a sanctioned sport. In his countless years overseeing the bowling program, he could boast about any number of achievements… but never did. Albert, alongside his brother Michael and son John, coached many teams to the state tournament, including the 2010 State Champion Lady Spartans. He coached one individual state title winner, and one individual state title runner-up. Additionally, one of his men’s varsity teams bowled the sport’s first 300 Baker game in Ohio. In 2022, Albert was selected as an inductee into the Boardman Athletics Hall of Fame and was humbled and honored to be recognized for his coaching contributions.

Albert was lifelong parishioner of St. Maron in Youngstown, and he devoted much of his life to serving the people of the parish in as many ways as he could. He taught MCF (Sunday School), was an adviser for the youth organization for almost 20 years and spent a great deal of time planning and organizing youth retreats and workshops both regionally and nationally. You could often find him in the Antioch Hall kitchen cooking mass quantities of something or other, side by side with his “brudder” in Christ, Deacon William George. His devotion to the Catholic faith also extended to the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, where he volunteered in a number of ways. His Catholic upbringing and deep devotion led him to become a subdeacon in May 2013, which presented Albert with a new way to further serve the needs of his faith community. In all of his life endeavors, Albert would be the first to note that he certainly didn’t achieve and accomplish any of this alone. He always accentuated the importance of his family and friends and the roles they played in helping him find success. He was the most family-oriented person you could find. He spent a lifetime caring for his mother, Paula, and grandmother, Kamillie, after the untimely death of his father. He was a true partner to his wife, Barbara, and a devoted father and grandfather. Albert was a thoughtful, loving man with a humble spirit. He was never happier than he was with his wife and kids by his side… until his granddaughter came along: Josie, the light of “Gid’s” life, whom he babysat weekly for most of her first three years of life. Conversely, he was never more frustrated than when he was watching Notre Dame, the Browns, Guardians, and Cavs, or when he lost a bet by half a point, but that didn’t stop him from watching… or betting the over. Neighbors may (or may not) miss hearing him yelling at the TV most Saturdays and Sundays.

He leaves to lovingly remember him and celebrate his life, daughter Marie-Elizabeth, son and daughter-in-law John and Jessy, and his most cherished granddaughter, Josie. Albert is survived by his siblings; Michael (Moke) Dohar and Theresa Tranovich; George Ellis, Lorraine Ellis, Cecilia and Michael Santucci, and Michael and Sue Ellis; his nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren; and the floofiest lap dog, Rudy, who is desperately going to miss the rotating hot breakfast offerings during his frequent staycations at Chez Dohar Boarding House.

Albert was preceded in death by his father and mother, Johnny and Paula; wife, Barbara; father- and mother-in-law, George and Elizabeth Ellis; grandmother, Kamillie Dohar; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins that will surely be rejoicing in this heavenly reunion.

Family and friends may pay their respects to Albert on Thursday morning, April 11, 2024 from 10:00 am until 11:20 am at St. Maron Maronite Church, 1555 S. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

There will be a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 11:30 am with Father Tony Massad as officiant. The funeral will also be livestreamed on St. Maron’s Facebook page for those who are unable to attend the services in person. 

Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
