Youngstown - There will be a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Monday, May 7, 2018, at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown, with Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Jr. officiating, for Angelo J. Cercone, 94, of Youngstown, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

Angelo will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born September 20, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Marianne (Antonucci) Cercone and was a lifelong area resident.

Angelo was a proud United States Army Veteran serving during World War II under General Patton and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He had a distinguished career as a veteran and was the recipient of a Medal of Honor along with many decorations and citations: the Good Conduct Medal, a Purple Heart, the Victory Medal, the EAME Theater Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Angelo was part of the Company B 44th Infantry Battalion 6th Armored Division and received an Honorable Discharge on December 6, 1945.

After proudly serving his country, Angelo was employed with Youngstown Metal Products as a Electrician and remained there until his retirement.

Angelo was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, its Senior Citizens group and was a charter member of the Vestibule Club all at the church.   

Angelo had many passions throughout his life. He stayed active with many hobbies, friendships and frequent visits to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He lived a prosperous and successful life and was an example of what it meant to be a faithful husband, father, grandfather great grandfather and friend.

He leaves behind to hold onto his precious memoires the love of his life, his wife of over 70 years the former Angie Pizzuto whom he married August 16, 1947 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a daughter Joanne (Jay) Pounds of Birmingham, Alabama, four grandchildren Cally (Bob) Dixon, Hamilton (Bonnie) Pounds, Michael (Melanie) Pounds and Danielle Cercone, and ten great grandchildren who all adored their “grandpa”, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents, Angelo was preceded in death by a son Michael Cercone, a brother Michael Cercone and a sister Tina Berarducci. 

Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday morning, May 7, 2018 from 9:00 am until 9:50 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, Youngstown.

Burial will take place at Green Haven Memorial Gardens, Canfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman (new location).
