BOARDMAN – Barbara Jane (Calpin) Casanta, 73, passed away on the morning of Saturday January 20th, 2024 at the Hospice of the Valley - Hospice House. She spent only a few peaceful hours there, after an infection quickly progressed.
Barb was born on September 8, 1950 in Youngstown Ohio, the daughter of the late Thomas and Dorothy Calpin.
She was a lifelong area resident and attended Cardinal Mooney High School and Kent State University. She met her husband Albert in fourth grade and celebrated 50 years of marriage with him in May of 2022. She was a teacher at St. Charles School in Boardman for over 30 years where she touched the lives of many students and families.
Barb lived life to the fullest. She loved planning parties and hosting holiday celebrations for family and friends. She would start her detailed lists early, requiring stops at several specific stores and restaurants around the area, and no one ever left her house hungry. She was best known for her pizzelles and spaghetti, both Italian favorites of the family even though she was as Irish as they come.
She made life magic, appreciated the little things, and always had a smile on her face. She was a woman of strong faith and never said a bad thing about anyone. Her prayer list was long, and she treasured the quiet moments in her chair as much as she loved being the social coordinator for her group of close high school and college friends. She would rehash fun times over and over while gearing up for the next one. She loved being by the water, particularly Lake Erie, a cup of hot tea and listening to her favorite songs. She showered those who were lucky enough to know her with so much love, particularly her 3 children. While they will miss her dearly, they know they hit the jackpot having had such a special Mom.
To enjoy lasting memories, she leaves behind her three children Chrissy (Nick) Nowak of Boston, Katie (Sean) Rasmussen of Sewickley and Tim Casanta of Chicago and three grandchildren Mila, James & Henry Rasmussen. She is also survived by her brother Tom (Patricia) Calpin, sister Mary Louise Musi, brother-in-law Howard Mark Ravenstahl, a sister-in-law Sandy (Ron) Zagorsky, a brother-in-law Ernie (Cathee) Casanta, and many cherished nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Casanta, parents Dorothy and Thomas Calpin, sister Caroline Ravenstahl, sister-in-law Jan Calpin, brother-in-law Thomas Musi, In-laws Armand, Rose and Antoinette Casanta, and son Albert Jr.
