Boardman –It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Fred R. Pruitt, 86, of Boardman, made his transition to his heavenly home peacefully Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 2025 with his loving family by his side.
Fred will always be remembered for his humility, calmness and quiet nature. He also will be remembered for his impeccable style for clothes.
He was born December 17, 1938 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Willie and Rosa (Gardner) Pruitt. Fred graduated from Holy Family High School and following his dream of becoming a doctor he continued his education at Howard University in Washington DC where he earned his undergraduate degree. Fred then attended and graduated from Meharry Medical College.
Fred returned to the Youngstown area in 1972 to do his residency at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and seeing the need to help others opened his own practice in 1974 along with being part of the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Pruitt was not only known for his exceptional medical expertise but also for his deep compassion and commitment to patients’ well-being. He was admired by colleagues for his integrity, work ethic, and ability to make difficult decisions with care and empathy. Dr. Pruitt leaves behind a legacy of healing, kindness, and service, which will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Fred had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling, but he especially loved spending time with his family. He was a grill master with BBQ and always looked forward to hosting family parties and reunions.
Fred leaves behind to hold onto his memories, the love of his life; his wife of over 19 years the former Marie Carlini, whom he married on May 28, 2005, his sons Dr. Chris (Val) Pruitt and Patsy Carlini-Pruitt, his beloved granddaughter Alexis, and his brother Dr. Carl (Cheryl) Pruitt. He also leaves behind a very special brother-in-law Raphe (Danielle) Neapolitan and sister-in-law Christine (Frank) Merlino and two special nephews who were very close to him Anthony Merlino and Raphe Neapolitan Jr., a dear aunt Mary Grace Welsh and his beloved two dogs Santino and Rocco along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his daughter Lysa Pruitt and his father and mother-in-law Patsy A. Jr. (Rose) Carlini.
Per Fred’s request there was private services held on Monday, March 10, 2025 at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.
