Eugene R. Whitacre

Niles – Eugene R. Whitacre, 72, of Niles, passed away on Wednesday morning, December 12, 2018.

Eugene will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends for his sense of humor, quick whit and kindness.

He was born December 3, 1946 in Youngstown, the son of Howard Raymond and Wilma (Goist) Whitacre and was a lifelong area resident.

Eugene was a 1965 graduate of East High School and then earned his Nursing Diploma from Boston University.

He started his nursing career as a Registered Nurse at Northside Hospital then was employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital along with several other facilities throughout the area.

Eugene was a proud United States Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War and earned the rank of Sergeant. His military occupation was sonar technician stationed on submarines in the Philippines. Eugene was awarded the following decorations for his service to our country; the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal and he received an Honorable Discharge on October 6, 1969. 

Eugene was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Niles and AARP.

Eugene had many passions throughout this life. He enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, growing exotic plants, and various types of fish in aquariums. He was also an excellent cook and his family and friends will miss his hot chili and oriental dishes.

He leaves behind to hold onto his memories a brother Charlie Whitacre of Struthers, a niece Bev (Michael) Paris of Austintown and his best friend David Mullins of Niles along with many other close friends.

Besides his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by two sisters Sally Mirone and Shirley Kelley.

Per Eugene’s request there was a private graveside service held at Belmont Park Cemetery with Father James Korda officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street in Boardman.
