Obituary

Lucy Gay (Rice) Jacobson died on Saturday, March 08, 2014 at the Park Vista Retirement Center in Youngstown, Ohio, surrounded by her family. Lucy was born on July 23, 1927 to Elmer Guy Rice and Sylvia Strickland Rice. She grew up on the family farm in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, near the village of Dixonville. Lucy attended a one room elementary school and graduated from Green Township High School in 1945. She immediately went to work for the Army Quartermaster Corps in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a clerk/stenographer. She was in Philadelphia on VJ Day and for the end of World War Two. After returning to Indiana, PA she worked as a waitress before enrolling in the School of Nursing at the Indiana Community Hospital. She graduated in 1950 as a Registered Nurse and worked at the hospital. She married LaRayne Clifford Jacobson on November 24, 1951 in Dixonville, PA., and moved to Youngstown, Ohio. They bought a home and raised their family in the Brownlee Woods neighborhood of Youngstown. Lucy worked for a period of time at the South Side Hospital in Youngstown and later was a shift supervisor at the Little Forest Medical Center. Lucy was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, a Greeter, Past President of the Ruth Circle, and member of the Booster Club. LaRayne and Lucy enjoyed camping at Pymatuning Lake, and traveling. Lucy enjoyed embroidery and crocheting, gardening, and growing flowers. She also enjoyed cooking and holding family dinners. She is survived by her four sons: Paul of Albany, Ga., Carl of Greenford, OH., Daniel and wife Sunni of Hartville, OH., and James and wife Michele Fredrick-Jacobson of Boardman, Ohio, a sister, Sara Mauk of Haines City, Fla., eight grandchildren, Amanda and Steve Jacobson, Scott Yungen, Matthew and Brandon Jacobson, Nicolina Fredrick, Antonio and Marcello Jacobson. Mrs. Jacobson was preceded in death by her husband LaRayne who died January 29, 2005, two brothers, Walter and William Rice, two sisters, Blanche Bush and Millie Fulmer. There will be a funeral service held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman. Friends may call on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 from 4: 00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman and on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until 12:50 p.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church.
