Stephen Medovich Obituary

Hubbard – Stephen P. “Ace” Medovich, 71, of Hubbard, made his transition to his Heavenly home early Tuesday morning, April 9, 2024 surrounded by his loving family after a 1 ½ year courageous battle with cancer.

Stephen left a lasting impression on everyone he met and will be remembered for his smile, sense of humor, generosity, and kindness.

He was born October 30, 1952 in Niles, the son of Fred and Josephine (Boccia) Medovich and was a lifelong area resident.

Stephen graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1970 and later attended The Ohio State University. He began his 33 year career in 1971, working at General Motors Lordstown in various capacities and retired in 2004. Among his fellow workers he was known as “Mr. New York” because he would entertain with his talented singing. Steve loved to sing and felt truly accomplished when he was asked to sing the National Anthem at a Cleveland Cavaliers game in the 90’s. Upon his retirement, he followed his passions in life.  He enjoyed entertaining and singing, which he did for many gatherings throughout the area. After retirement, he spent much of his time providing entertainment at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the tri-county area and throughout parts of Western Pennsylvania. His love for singing and entertaining brought great joy to the residents of many different facilities, and he accomplished this until recently when his illness prevented him from continuing. He was also a talented local artist, refinishing many statues and murals for many churches throughout the valley.

Stephen was a devout Catholic and his relationship with God was always a priority.  He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica and an active volunteer at the Basilica & National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson, where he dedicated 40 years of service. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Immacolata Council 274 and always enjoyed helping at the Mount Carmel Festival each summer.

Steve was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan and season ticket holder. He loved going to games and sitting in the Dawg Pound. He also loved eating hotdogs and watching the Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed gardening, canning, fireworks, traveling with his wife, playing darts and his Italian and Croatian heritage.  He was an exceptional cook. Over the past couple years, he enjoyed cooking for the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Hubbard, where he formed a strong friendship with the Sisters who loved him dearly and treated him with true kindness. Steve always made his family his top priority and looked forward to spending time with them.  He loved being a Pop-Pop.

Stephen leaves behind precious memories with his beloved wife of 16 years, the former  Elizabeth Courtney whom he married October 20, 2007 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, a daughter Sarah (Dustin) Tolson of Hubbard, two beloved grandchildren Evelyn “Evie” and Charles “Charlie” Tolson, his mother Josphine Medovich, a brother Mark (Jill) Medovich of Florida, and a sister Jan (Mark) Higdon of Columbus along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom he loved and cherished.

Stephen was preceded in death by his father Fred Medovich.

Family and friends may pay their respects to Steve on Saturday morning, April 13, 2024 from 9:30 am until 10:50 am with a Divine Liturgy to be held at 11:00 am all at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N Lipkey Rd., North Jackson, with The Most Reverend Chorbishop Anthony Spinosa as officiant.

Stephen will be laid to rest at Niles City Cemetery with a private burial.

In addition, they would like to extend their sincere gratitude to The Most Reverend Bishop David Bonnar for his prayers, blessings, understanding and support throughout Steve’s battle with cancer and a special thank you to The Reverend Monsignor Michael Cariglio for being a true friend for many years.
